Overview
IB Sciences encompass the full range of scientific disciplines within the IB framework, from the Middle Years Programme through to the Diploma Programme. In the MYP, sciences are taught as an integrated discipline, encouraging students to see connections between biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. In the DP, students choose individual science subjects, but the interdisciplinary thinking developed in the MYP remains essential. Whether a student is studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies, or Computer Science, a strong scientific foundation built on inquiry, analysis and critical evaluation is the key to success.
What Makes It Challenging
The transition from MYP Sciences to DP science subjects is one of the most significant academic shifts students face. In the MYP, sciences are assessed through broad criteria such as inquiry, communication and reflection. In the DP, the assessment becomes highly specific, with rigorous external examinations and an Internal Assessment that demands university-level experimental skills. Many students struggle with the sudden increase in content volume, the precision required in scientific writing, and the mathematical demands of subjects like Physics and Chemistry. Building a strong scientific foundation during MYP is critical for DP success.
How Pietro Helps
I provide integrated science support that bridges the MYP and DP, helping students build the conceptual understanding and practical skills they need at every stage. For MYP students, I reinforce core scientific concepts, develop inquiry skills and ensure they are well prepared for the transition to DP sciences. For DP students, I offer subject-specific support in Physics, Chemistry and related sciences, always emphasising the connections between disciplines. My background as a physicist gives me a unique perspective on how the sciences interconnect, and I use this to help students see the bigger picture while mastering the details.
Common Challenges
Navigating the transition from integrated MYP Sciences to specialised DP science subjects
Building sufficient mathematical skills to support quantitative science work
Developing scientific writing skills for reports, IAs and exam answers
Understanding abstract scientific concepts without sufficient practical laboratory experience
Strategies for Success
Start building strong mathematical foundations early — they underpin all quantitative science work
Develop a habit of connecting concepts across different science disciplines
Practise scientific writing regularly, focusing on precision and use of correct terminology
Use real-world examples and applications to deepen understanding of abstract concepts
A strong scientific foundation is the springboard for everything that follows in the IB Diploma. Whether your child is in the MYP and needs to build confidence, or in the DP and needs targeted subject support, I can design a programme that bridges gaps and accelerates progress.
