Overview
IB Chemistry explores the composition, structure and transformations of matter across three major branches: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. At both Higher and Standard Level, students study stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox processes and organic chemistry. Higher Level adds significant depth in topics such as further organic mechanisms, spectroscopic analysis and advanced energetics. The course requires a balance of conceptual understanding, mathematical competence and practical laboratory skills.
What Makes It Challenging
IB Chemistry is often perceived as one of the hardest sciences because of the sheer volume of content and the variety of skills required. Students must memorise detailed factual knowledge while also developing the ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar situations. Organic chemistry, with its reaction mechanisms and synthesis pathways, requires a different kind of thinking from the mathematical problem-solving of physical chemistry. The Internal Assessment demands careful experimental design, precise data collection and a structured scientific write-up. Many students underestimate the level of detail examiners expect in written explanations and definitions.
How Pietro Helps
I approach IB Chemistry with the same scientific rigour I bring to my physics research. My lessons emphasise understanding the underlying principles — why reactions happen, how bonding determines properties, what drives equilibrium — rather than rote memorisation. I help students build mental models that connect topics across the syllabus, making it easier to recall and apply knowledge. We use past papers strategically, focusing on the question styles and command terms that appear most frequently. For the Internal Assessment, I guide students in designing experiments that are both feasible and academically strong, ensuring every IB criterion is addressed.
Common Challenges
Memorising the vast amount of factual content across all topics while maintaining deep understanding
Understanding organic chemistry mechanisms and predicting products of unfamiliar reactions
Applying mathematical skills to physical chemistry calculations (energetics, kinetics, equilibrium)
Writing precise definitions and explanations that earn full marks from IB examiners
Planning and executing a successful Internal Assessment experiment with reliable data
Strategies for Success
Create topic-by-topic revision cards with key definitions, equations and reaction types
Practise organic chemistry by drawing mechanisms repeatedly until they become intuitive
Use past papers to identify recurring question patterns and practise under timed conditions
Learn the IB command terms (explain, describe, compare, evaluate) and what each demands in an answer
For the IA, select a research question that is specific, measurable and achievable with available equipment
Chemistry requires both scientific understanding and strategic exam preparation. With my background in physical sciences and years of IB tutoring experience, I help students master every branch of the syllabus — from organic mechanisms to equilibrium calculations.
