Overview
The IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year curriculum designed to develop well-rounded, intellectually curious students. Beyond six subject groups, students engage with the core components — Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) — which together can contribute up to three bonus points to the final score of 45. Success in the IB Diploma requires not only excellence in individual subjects but also the ability to manage workload across all components, make strategic subject choices and maintain a holistic perspective on learning. With careful planning and the right guidance, students can maximise their total score and open doors to the world's top universities.
The Core Components
The three core components of the IB Diploma — TOK, EE and CAS — are often the most misunderstood and underestimated parts of the programme. Theory of Knowledge challenges students to reflect on the nature of knowledge itself, asking questions about how we know what we claim to know. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper that introduces students to the rigour of academic writing and original inquiry. CAS requires students to engage in creative, physical and service-oriented activities, fostering personal growth beyond academics. Together, these elements distinguish the IB from other curricula and, when approached strategically, they can significantly boost a student's total score.
How Pietro Helps
I offer holistic IB Diploma support that goes beyond tutoring in individual subjects. I help students develop a strategic study plan that balances all six subjects with the core components, ensuring nothing is neglected. For TOK, I guide students in connecting their scientific knowledge to broader epistemological questions, helping them write compelling TOK essays and deliver confident presentations. For the Extended Essay, I provide supervision and mentoring from topic selection through research methodology to final drafting, drawing on my own experience in academic research. I also advise on CAS planning and subject selection, helping students choose the combination that best supports their university ambitions while playing to their strengths.
Common Challenges
Balancing the workload across six subjects plus TOK, EE and CAS simultaneously
Choosing the right subject combination and levels to match university requirements
Writing a strong Extended Essay that demonstrates genuine independent research
Engaging meaningfully with TOK rather than treating it as a box-ticking exercise
Maintaining motivation and well-being under sustained academic pressure over two years
Strategies for Success
Create a long-term study calendar that maps all deadlines, exams and core component milestones
Start the Extended Essay and TOK essay early, allowing time for multiple drafts and feedback cycles
Choose subjects strategically — consider both university requirements and personal strengths
Use TOK as an opportunity to deepen subject understanding by exploring knowledge questions across disciplines
Plan CAS activities that genuinely interest you — authentic engagement leads to stronger reflections
The IB Diploma is more than a collection of subjects — it is an integrated academic experience that rewards strategic thinking and disciplined time management. I have guided numerous students through the full Diploma, helping them navigate subject choices, master the core components and achieve scores that unlock their first-choice universities. Let's work together to build your path to success.
