Overview
Gaining admission to competitive STEM programmes at top universities often requires more than excellent IB grades. Many institutions use entrance examinations to assess aptitude, subject knowledge and problem-solving ability. In Italy, the IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) and TOLC (Test OnLine CISIA) are standard for medicine and engineering programmes. In the UK, applicants may face the BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test), PAT (Physics Aptitude Test) or MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test), among others. Each test has its own format, timing and content emphasis, and targeted preparation is essential to perform at your best.
Understanding Each Test
Each entrance examination tests a different set of skills. The IMAT combines scientific knowledge with logical reasoning and general knowledge, requiring breadth as well as depth. TOLC tests focus on subject-specific content in areas such as engineering, science and economics, with an emphasis on speed and accuracy. The BMAT, used by medical schools including Oxford and Cambridge, assesses scientific aptitude, problem-solving and written communication. The PAT, required for Physics and Engineering at Oxford, demands strong mathematical skills applied to physical problems. The MAT, also for Oxford applicants, tests mathematical thinking beyond the standard curriculum. Understanding the specific demands of your target test is the first step toward effective preparation.
How Pietro Helps
I bring first-hand knowledge of STEM university admissions from both the Italian and British systems. My preparation programmes are tailored to each specific test: I analyse the format, identify the content areas where students need the most work, and build a structured revision plan with regular timed practice. For the IMAT and TOLC, I cover the scientific and mathematical content systematically while training logical reasoning skills. For the PAT and MAT, I focus on developing the problem-solving techniques and mathematical fluency that these tests demand. For the BMAT, I help students with both the scientific knowledge sections and the written task. Throughout the process, I simulate real test conditions so that students arrive on exam day confident and well-prepared.
Common Challenges
Preparing for entrance tests while simultaneously managing IB coursework and exams
Adapting to test formats and question styles that differ significantly from IB assessments
Developing the speed and accuracy needed for tightly timed multiple-choice tests
Covering content areas that go beyond the IB syllabus, particularly for PAT and MAT
Managing test anxiety and performing under the pressure of high-stakes, one-off examinations
Strategies for Success
Begin preparation early — ideally six to twelve months before the test date — to allow time for thorough content review
Practise with official past papers and simulated tests under realistic timed conditions
Identify your weakest content areas through diagnostic tests and prioritise them in your study plan
Develop test-specific strategies such as elimination techniques for multiple-choice questions
University entrance tests can feel overwhelming, but with the right preparation they become manageable and even predictable. I have helped students succeed in IMAT, TOLC, BMAT, PAT and MAT examinations, and I understand exactly what each test demands. Whether you are applying to Italian, British or other international universities, let's build a preparation plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.
