Time Management and Paper Strategy

IGCSE Maths papers are designed so that each mark is worth roughly one minute of working time. A 2-hour paper worth 100 marks means you have about 1.2 minutes per mark — use this to budget your time. Start with the questions you find easiest to build confidence and bank marks early. If a question is taking more than double its allocated time, write down what you can, move on, and come back to it at the end. Always leave 5-10 minutes at the end to check your answers, particularly for arithmetic errors and unit mistakes that cost easy marks.

Showing Working and Avoiding Common Mistakes

Showing your working is not optional in IGCSE Maths — it is how you earn method marks even when your final answer is wrong. Write one clear step per line, and never skip steps in your head. The most common mark-losing mistakes are: forgetting to include units in your final answer, rounding intermediate steps instead of only the final answer, misreading negative signs in calculations, and not simplifying fractions fully. For "show that" questions, you must start from the given information and work towards the stated result, showing every algebraic step clearly.

Calculator and Non-Calculator Paper Strategies

On the non-calculator paper, examiners design questions with "friendly" numbers that work out neatly — if you are getting complicated decimals, you have probably made an error. Practise mental arithmetic and fraction work regularly so these skills are sharp on exam day. On the calculator paper, learn how to use your calculator efficiently: store intermediate results in the memory to avoid rounding errors, use the table function for graph questions, and know how to access statistics functions for mean and standard deviation. Always write down the full calculator display before rounding to the required number of significant figures or decimal places.
